Stroller fans, mosquito nets and the summer kit that matters
Summer with a stroller is mostly about heat and insects, and both have simple answers.
Covering a stroller makes it hotter
Draping a blanket over the hood to make shade traps air and raises the temperature inside considerably. It is the most common and most counterproductive habit.
Use the canopy and a purpose-made net, and keep air moving.
Clip-on fans do the real work
Moving air is what makes the difference on a still day. A rechargeable clip fan with a flexible arm can be aimed away from the face and still cool the seat.
Three speeds is plenty; the lowest setting is the one that gets used.
Fan safety
Mount it so the baby cannot reach the housing, and check the clamp on a firm part of the frame rather than fabric.
Enclosed-blade designs are the ones to choose for a stroller.
Mosquito nets
A fitted net with elastic stays put; a loose one becomes a hazard. Universal nets fit most strollers but check the depth of your hood.
Fine mesh is worth it — a coarse net stops very little.
Timing beats equipment
Avoiding the hottest hours does more than any accessory. Where that is not possible, shade plus airflow is the combination.
Check the back of the neck rather than hands to judge temperature.
Sunglasses actually stay on
Flexible frames with a strap are the only ones that survive a baby. Rigid frames are removed within seconds.
Polarised lenses matter near water and glass-fronted streets.
Storing it all
Fans and nets live in the stroller basket and get forgotten in October. Take them out before winter or the fan battery will be flat by spring.
Charge the fan before storing it.
